How Active Monitoring Can Protect Pupils: True Story
A real incident happening last week, the following highlights the vital role Active Monitoring plays in safeguarding children. It is shared not to shock but to highlight the very real dangers surrounding young people today. We have omitted names to protect the confidentiality of those involved.
A man attended a short course at an FE College in England. No one knew but the man was a registered paedophile. During the course of his studies he typed some concerning words into Google (we have chosen not to repeat them). The College was protected by Smoothwall’s filtering and monitoring software. Smoothwall’s filtering software meant he couldn’t see the content he was looking for. And Smoothwall’s Visigo monitoring software registered the words and triggered a high risk alert. The Police were called and the man was arrested. No one was harmed and man was removed from the premises within 45 minutes of typing in the words.
All Schools and Colleges are now required by Ofsted to have adequate Monitoring provisions in place. Active Monitoring solutions are able to detect not only extreme situations like this one but identify pupils who are involved in or being harmed by cyberbullying, sexual harm, mental health, violence, drugs, gangs and much more. Unfortunately not all schools have Active Monitoring. Some don’t yet understand it and some are struggling to find the funds.
Smoothwall’s Online Safety Experts have recognised these challenges and written two documents to clearly outline what Monitoring is, and to help your school build a case for funding. Both can be downloaded for free and shared with your school’s Safeguarding team.
