Smoothwall volunteer to improve the facilities at Leeds Children’s Charity

Here at Smoothwall we like to get our hands dirty for a good cause. Earlier this week a group of 8 members of staff from the Leeds office arrived at Lineham Farm, the new site of Leeds Children’s Charity, to help improve their facilities.

Leeds Children’s Charity provide respite and short break opportunities for the most disadvantaged children in Leeds. Click here for more information on the great work the charity does.

The day started at 9am with a health and safety briefing and a tour of the facilities from Peter, one of the groundsmen at the farm. After explaining the long list of jobs that needed doing, we split off into groups and got to work.

The morning consisted of two challenging tasks - removing grass in an enclosed area to allow it to be used as a multi-sensory playground, and replacing fence posts that surround the pig enclosure that had become loose and were no longer secure.

Both tasks were hard work but everyone got stuck in, at one point Jasmine the pig even showed interest in helping out! Tasks after lunch included clearing logs from a forest area and finishing off a fence in the main field.

Dave, one of our Channel team members, put his joinery skills to use and fixed a door that connects one of the gardens to the driveway. Some of us even managed a quick sunbathe in between tasks!

At the end of the day it was only right that we tested out the low ropes course - Simon, our Head of Business Systems got round the fastest.

The full range of photos can be found on our charity page. Claire Stead, Head of Marketing at Smoothwall, commented:Everyone had a wonderful day improving the facilities for Leeds Children’s Charity, and it was even better to see children enjoying their time on the farm.

For us, it was a great opportunity for our team to build communication and team working skills, whilst having fun and making a real difference.

The sunshine held out for us which made the experience even better, and it’s certainly motivated me personally to continue my fundraising efforts for the rest of this year and hopefully for everyone else.

We have several fundraising events planned for the next few months and are in the process of organising future volunteer days at Lineham Farm, for more information on our up and coming events visit our charity page.

So far the Smoothwall team have raised an amazing £1254.91 for the charity through various challenges this year. If you’d like to show your support and help us reach our target of £2500, visit our JustGiving page.
