Ten Group

Who

TEN Group was established in 2012 as a federation of seven educational institutions with 11,000 pupils and 1,000 staff in Norfolk.

The Challenge

It was vital that TEN found an education focused web filtering and firewall solution.

Big results

After implementing Smoothwall’s UTM solution, the group now provides a standard online experience for all users.

What’s the background?

TEN Group was established in 2012 as a federation of seven educational institutions from primary through to further education. With 11,000 pupils and 1,000 staff, the network consists of approximately 5,000 devices and 1,000 mobile devices.

What was the problem?

Nick Kershaw, Infrastructure Services Manager at TEN, explained that before the group was formed, each institution used a different solution. “It quickly became apparent that we needed to standardise the web filtering and firewall solutions across the different organisations. It was important that we found one that was education focused in terms of features and performance, but also in terms of price – some of the solutions available for enterprise aren’t within our budget.”

How Smoothwall helped

After implementing Smoothwall’s UTM solution Nick was impressed at its simplicity for an academic setting. “The solution is very straightforward to use, especially the process of setting up web filtering policies. Not only has it allowed us to standardise the user experience for all students, but it’s a lot easier for my team as we’ve only got the one solution to manage.”

When asked about the installation and aftercare support, Nick commented, “The installation was very simple, Smoothwall came on-site to set everything up so we got the assistance we needed. And in relation to support, most issues and solutions can be found on the Smoothwall Community, but when we’ve had to contact support with the odd bug, they’ve always resolved the issue quickly. Looking forwards, it looks like the things we require are on Smoothwall’s roadmap which is very positive.”

Choosing Smoothwall was simple – it’s a better overall product with a better price.
